Impounded Vehicle Sales

Unclaimed Vehicles

If the owner or lien holder of a seized vehicle, vessel or outboard motor does not recover it within 30 days from the date of seizure, or if the DMV is unable to determine the owner or lien holder through reasonable efforts, the DMV is permitted under Utah Code Section 41-1a-1103 to sell the vehicle, vessel, or outboard motor.

Unpaid Towing and Storage Fees

If, after a legally impounded vehicle, vessel or outboard motor has been released by the DMV, the registered owner or lien holder fails to take possession and satisfy the amount due to the place of storage within 30 days from the date of the DMV release, the DMV will re-notify the owner or lien holder and sell the vehicle, vessel or outboard motor 30 days from the date of the notice.

Impounded Vehicle Sales

Impounded vehicle sales are conducted by authorized representatives of the DMV and are held in the form of a public auction at the place of storage.

At least five days prior to the date set for sale, the DMV publishes a notice of sale in a newspaper of general statewide circulation setting forth the date, time and place of sale and a description of the impounded vehicle, vessel or outboard motor to be sold to the highest bidder.

Interested buyers may view the vehicles at the place of storage prior to the auction.

Questions and Answers

Will you take a check?

Purchase of vehicles at a state auction is a cash-only transaction.

Will I receive a title once I've purchased the vehicle?

A Certificate of Sale is provided to the person who purchases a vehicle at a state auction or impound sale. The purchaser presents this at the DMV office when titling and registering the vehicle.

Does the Certificate of Sale supersede previous liens?

Yes.

Is the Certificate of Sale accepted outside of Utah?

No. The purchaser must first title and register the vehicle in Utah before the vehicle can be titled in another state.

Will I receive a 'clean/regular title' when I register the vehicle in Utah?

Yes, but odometer will read "not actual mileage". However, if the vehicle had a "salvage" or "rebuilt-restored" brand on the title before the sale, that brand will remain on the new title.
