Special Group License Plates

Special group license plates are plates that generate funds for specific purposes or honor or recognize specific groups of people. Special group plates have different requirements and fees for obtaining and renewing the plates, each described below. To obtain a special group plate, you must meet the requirements and pay the required fees. Special group plates consist of a five-character combination on the right with the special group sticker on the left and a descriptive phrase on the bottom. Some special group plates can be personalized, as noted below.

To obtain a special group plate by mail, please submit a copy of your current registration, any documentation required for the special plate, a check that includes the cost of the special plate and/or donation fee, $5 for a new registration and decal, plus $3.00 for postage to:

This plate is issued to identify those with a current Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license to operate a fixed radio station in the State of Utah. The assigned call letters determine the license plate number.

About This Plate

This plate benefits organizations that create or support autism awareness programs. This plate generates funds for research, public awareness and education programs, scholarship programs, and to provide support for caregivers for individuals with autism. It is available to any person who desires to make the required contribution. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

This plate generates funds for both the Guardian Ad Litem organization and the Children's Museum of Utah. The Guardian Ad Litem organization provides a legal voice for abused, neglected, and abandoned children in the courts of Utah to help ensure that the children's needs are met. The donation is equally divided between the two organizations. This plate is available to any person who desires to make the required contribution. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

Clean Fuel – Clean Air (C Plate)

Unique Vehicle Special Group

About This Plate

As of July 1, 2011, the Clean Fuel plate is no longer issued by the State of Utah. The plate is still valid on all vehicles already registered with the plate. This plate is issued to individuals who qualify for disabled person's plates for use in specially designated handicapped parking spaces. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

Disabled Veteran

Honor Special Group

About This Plate

This license plate recognizes Utah resident disabled veterans for their military service. As Utah Tax Code Section 41-1a-414 does not provide handicapped parking space privileges for the Disabled Veteran license plate, a disabled windshield placard must be obtained separately. This plate may be transferred to the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran so long as the surviving spouse remains unmarried. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

Letter from Department of Veterans Affairs or other United States military entity certifying the disabled status of the veteran

Farm Vehicle

About This Plate

This plate is issued to a farm vehicle used exclusively to transport farm products or supplies. This plate may only be issued to trucks. An emissions exemption form for trucks with a registered weight of 12,000 lbs or less may be obtained from the county Emissions Control office. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

Firefighter

This plate identifies and recognizes those trained and certified as firefighters, and generates funds for the Firefighter Restricted Account. This account is directed by the State Fire Marshal's Office and is used for the fire museum, training, and scholarships. This plate is available only to current fulltime, part‐time, or retired firefighters. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC‐817 with the required personalization fee.

Requirements:

Any one of the following may be used:
- Evidence indicating current membership in the Utah Firefighters' Association.
- An official identification card issued by a firefighting entity identifying the applicant as an employee or volunteer.
- A letter on letterhead from a firefighting entity or from the county/municipality in which the firefighting entity is located, identifying the applicant as an employee, retired employee or volunteer of the firefighting entity.

About This Plate

This plate recognizes Utah resident military veterans held as a prisoner of war. This plate may be transferred to the surviving spouse of a former prisoner of war so long as the surviving spouse remains unmarried. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

This plate honors the family of a member of the military who is killed while serving in the United States armed forces. The applicant must be a recipient of the Gold Star award, issued by the U.S. Secretary of Defense. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

- Document showing classification of death as listed by the U.S. Secretary of Defense

About This Plate

This plate recognizes those individuals serving as an Honorary Consul. The Utah Consular Corps consists of appointed Consuls who represent and work to promote commerce relations with the country the Consul represents.

This plate must be ordered directly through the Miscellaneous Services Unit.

Current U.S. Department of State Consular identification card with the official title listed as "Honorary Consul."

Unique Vehicle Special Group

About This Plate

This plate is used to identify a vehicle that is at least 20 years old or is recognized as a special interest vehicle by the Division Director. Considerations in determining whether a vehicle may be classified as a special interest vehicle include: a make that is no longer manufactured, a make produced in limited or token quantities, an experimental vehicle, a vehicle designed solely for educational or display purposes, or a vehicle being collected, preserved, restored, maintained, or operated by a collector or hobbyist as a leisure pursuit. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee.

Vehicle must meet requirements set forth in UCA Section Section 41-1a-102(57)

State Legislator

About This Plate

This plate identifies and recognizes those individuals elected to serve in the Utah Legislature. State Senator plates will display "(District Number) SEN" as the assigned license plate number. State Representative plates will display "(District Number) REP" as the assigned license plate number. A second set of State Legislator plates may be obtained for a second vehicle owned by the Legislator. This second set will display "SEN (District Number)" or "REP (District Number)" as the assigned license plate number.

This plate identifies and recognizes those individuals elected to serve in the United States Congress from the State of Utah. License plates will display "USS 1" (U.S. Senator 1) for the senior U.S. Senator, "USS 2" (U.S. Senator 2) for the junior U.S. Senator, or "USC (District Number)" (U.S. Congress) for other representatives.

This plate must be ordered directly through the Miscellaneous Services Unit.

This plate identifies a vehicle at least 30 years old, is primarily a collector's item, and used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses, but is not used for general daily transportation. This plate may be personalized with up to 5 alphanumeric characters by submitting Form TC-817 with the required personalization fee. A vintage vehicle, as defined in Utah Code 41-21-1, qualifies for an exemption from safety and emission inspections.
