Special group license plates are plates that generate funds for specific purposes or honor or recognize specific groups of people. Special group plates have different requirements and fees for obtaining and renewing the plates, each described below. To obtain a special group plate, you must meet the requirements and pay the required fees. Special group plates consist of a five-character combination on the right with the special group sticker on the left and a descriptive phrase on the bottom. Some special group plates can be personalized, as noted below.

This plate is issued to identify those with a current Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license to operate a fixed radio station in the State of Utah. The assigned call letters determine the license plate number.

This plate generates funds for both the Guardian Ad Litem organization and the Children's Museum of Utah. The Guardian Ad Litem organization provides a legal voice for abused, neglected, and abandoned children in the courts of Utah to help ensure that the children's needs are met. As of July 1, 2011, the Clean Fuel plate is no longer issued by the State of Utah. The plate is still valid on all vehicles already registered with the plate. This license plate recognizes Utah resident disabled veterans for their military service. As Utah Tax Code Section 41-1a-414 does not provide handicapped parking space privileges for the Disabled Veteran license plate, a disabled windshield placard must be obtained separately. This plate may be transferred to the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran so long as the surviving spouse remains unmarried. This plate is issued to a farm vehicle used exclusively to transport farm products or supplies. This plate may only be issued to trucks. An emissions exemption form for trucks with a registered weight of 12,000 lbs or less may be obtained from the county Emissions Control office. This plate identifies and recognizes those trained and certified as firefighters, and generates funds for the Firefighter Restricted Account. This account is directed by the State Fire Marshal's Office and is used for the fire museum, training, and scholarships. This plate recognizes Utah resident military veterans held as a prisoner of war. This plate may be transferred to the surviving spouse of a former prisoner of war so long as the surviving spouse remains unmarried. This plate honors the family of a member of the military who is killed while serving in the United States armed forces. The applicant must be a recipient of the Gold Star award, issued by the U.S. Secretary of Defense. This plate is used to identify a vehicle that is at least 20 years old or is recognized as a special interest vehicle by the Division Director. Considerations in determining whether a vehicle may be classified as a special interest vehicle include: a make that is no longer manufactured, a make produced in limited or token quantities, an experimental vehicle, a vehicle designed solely for educational or display purposes, or a vehicle being collected, preserved, restored, maintained, or operated by a collector or hobbyist as a leisure pursuit. State Representative plates will display "(District Number) REP" as the assigned license plate number. This second set will display "SEN (District Number)" or "REP (District Number)" as the assigned license plate number.
